Karen L. Suyemoto PhD
My scholarship, teaching, mentoring, and consultations aim to help people develop skills to promote social justice action, resist and heal from oppression, and cultivate authentic relationships. I am particularly interested in the interactions and interdependency of individual conscientization, relational growth and accountability, and structural change.
My Specializations
Consulting
I offer training and consultation in transformative social justice education, anti-racism, and building empathy and equity. My work mainly supports educators, student services, and mental health providers, helping them create more inclusive and supportive environments for all individuals.
Research
My research explores resistance to racism and oppression, focusing on both privileged and oppressed perspectives. I study Asian American experiences with racialization, transformative education for anti-racism, and the meanings behind racialization processes, aiming to promote understanding and social change.
Professor
As a professor in Clinical Psychology and Ethnic Studies, I teach courses on race, culture, and mental health. My classes empower students by promoting critical thinking, relational understanding, and skills to share marginalized voices, fostering a more inclusive academic community.
